Another day trip that we took during the break was to a small town in the cloud forest called Mindo. It was about 1 1/2 hour drive northwest of the city and it was a beautiful but winding drive. If you've ever been to Hana on the island of Maui, the drive is a little bit like that! Due to the climate and elevation, Mindo appears somewhat tropical. The clouds that overhang the surrounding hillsides keep the vegetation very dense and green. Mindo is a great place for birdwatchers, and hikers. We had heard about their butterfly exhibit and decided to check it out! We were not disappointed!
Mindo is known to host a large number of species of hummingbirds.
The kids enjoyed feeding the huge koi swimming around in the ponds.

In order to hold the butterflies, we had to scoop up a bit of rotten banana on our fingers to lure them on...
We had so much fun! I only wish that I knew the names of the different butterflies that we saw.
After visiting the Mariposarium (mariposa is the spanish word for butterfly), we headed to a little cafe in the main part of town called, El Quetzal. It was a neat little spot that we found on Trip Adviser. We were not disappointed! They serve organic fair that they grow right in their own garden. They also make their own chocolate and coffee. We had the MOST DELICIOUS brownie I have ever eaten...I should've taken a photo but it didn't last long enough:)
